Les Maîtres de l´Affiche At the end of the 19th century the new art form "posters" was so welcomed
and appreciated by artists but also by the public, that Jules Cheret, a
famous French designer-lithographer, developed the idea of a series of small
lithographed versions of the original posters for the general public. In France, one could subscribe to a series called "The Masters of the Posters".
Covering a period of 5 years one received a monthly set of 4 lithographed
mini posters. A series of 240 of these very well executed mini-posters (± 40
x 30 cm) with dry stamps were thus distributed over France in quite large
numbers. Yet, today they are becoming difficult to find and prices for
original French posters go up.This "Poster mania", in 1895, spread into England: "The Illustrated Poster" and into the US "Posters in Miniature". In Germany, a bit later: "Das Plakat". Wonderful items to collect these often beautiful little posters fetch prices
from $ 200 to $1000 depending on the artist, rarity and condition. If you are looking for Original french posters, be sure to check out our site! You may also of course give us a ring or send us an e-mail. All the contact details are under the 'contact' section of our website. |
